Please tell us about yourself.

By training, I am a speech-language pathologist but I specialized in services for infants and toddlers and school-aged population. I’m the head librarian at a local seminary. I am a licensed minister in both the United Holy Church and the Baptist church and currently serve as an associate minister at First Baptist Church Vienna. I’ve contributed to six devotionals of which two were published this year.

Are you a brand or business owner? If so can you tell us about the products and services you offer?

I’m in the process of establishing the brand as I wear so many hats; with the speech-language pathology background I have the parent advocacy component of my practice and providing consultative services/support; with the ministry, I preach, teach and do workshops and then with the writing I do spoken word for special occasions/events, commissioned writing services, youth writing workshops.

How has writing a book helped your business or brand?

It has expanded my voice beyond the wall of the church and given me a broader audience.

Tell us about your book.

No More Hashtags Remembrance and Reflections is collection poetry that pays tribute to the lives of those lost to police brutality. Too often we have we hear a sound bite, see a clip, read an article and it trends for a couple of days or maybe a few hours and then it’s gone as if it didn’t matter; that the life didn’t matter. I wanted to bring awareness to those stories that made the headlines and those you may not have even heard to remember and reflect on what must we do, what can we do to address the issues of police brutality and social justice and not just give voice but follow through with action.

What inspired you to write your book?

I was in the midst of recovering from major surgery, on heavy medications, couldn’t drive and at that time I was hearing news stories daily dealing with police brutality. I didn’t feel there was anything I could do. There was a sense of urgency to do something. I heard ”write”. I had every excuse not to because I was dealing with my own physical pain and the trauma that I was surrounded by and of course, there are enough people reporting and providing commentary so what could I possibly add. Yet the weight was so heavy that I couldn’t get the names, the pictures, the images or stories out of my head and I put pen to paper, and once I did everything flowed.

Where can people purchase your book?

You can purchase my book directly from my website monicaleak.com or through any of your major online retailers like Amazon.com

What are the top three takeaways you would like your readers to walk away with?

Voice brings life to things in need of remembrance so that we do not repeat the mistakes of the past. Awareness is a call to action from seats of passivity and ignorance. In light of COVID-19, it’s important to remember that words are power and life so to reflect on our words before release is crucial.
